abertis' origins are to be found in the construction, management and operation of Spain's first toll motorways.

In 2000, acesa and aumar embarked upon an expansion programme, broadening their activities to include new areas and developing their presence in new markets in Spain, Europe, and Latin America. Finally, the holding companies of these two great groups, Acesa Infraestructuras and Aurea Concesiones de Infraestructuras, merged following the acquisition of iberpistas by acesa. This gave rise to the birth of abertis in April 2003.

abertis holds a position as a key business group in the field of infrastructure for mobility and communications and the market was quick to back its strategy of both leadership and quality in the management of high-capacity road routes and of expansion into new sectors.

In December 2003, abertis acquired retevisión, acquired retevisión, Spain’s leading operator in the distribution of radio and television signals. retevisión thus joined the telecommunications infrastructure activity area, to form part, together with tradia –leader in this sector in Catalonia and an abertis operator since 2000– of abertis telecom, the company that channels investments in this sector.

In January 2005, abertis secured control of British airports operator TBI via ACDL, the consortium formed by abertis (90%) and Aena Internacional (10%). With this operation, the abertis group adds a network of eight airports, owned or operated under a concession scheme, located in the UK, Sweden, the US and Bolivia.

abertis’s internationalisation process took a significant leap forward in 2006 with the acquisition of French motorway operator sanef and, in January 2007, with the acquisition of a 32% in the capital of Eutelsat, Europe’s leading satellite operator.

Subsequently, the acquisition of the DCA airport group (2007), which gives abertis a presence in a total of 30 airports in 9 countries, as well as the entry of abertis logística in Portugal and Chile, have been key steps in the construction of a leading European infrastructure group.
