In 2005, a study was carried out to compile an inventory of all the natural areas included within the Natura 2000 Network crossed by a section of motorway managed by the companies belonging to abertis in Spain: acesa, aucat, Aulesa, aumar, iberpistas and castellana.

The Natura 2000 Network currently forms the foundations for representing protected natural areas. Although it has not received definitive approval from the European Union, this network of natural areas encompasses and enlarges a significant number of protected areas at both national and autonomous-community level.
