The works on the extension of the C-32 motorway from Palafolls to Tordera, valued at 40.6 millions euros, have been awarded
Motorway concession operator acesa has awarded the contract for the lengthening of the C-32 motorway from Palafolls to Tordera, worth 40.6 million euros, to the company Dragados, S.A. Work is planned to begin this same month of May and will last 15 months. Catalonia’s Ministry of Town and Country Planning and Public Works (DPTOP) and acesa have signed an agreement that will form part of the Convention covering all the actions, documents and undertakings between the two parties, in the aim of providing a global response to the requirements for improved mobility in the C-32 motorway corridor and the Maresme district.
acesa, the current operator of the C-32 between Montgat and Palafolls, will build the new section, which will be toll-free for internal movements (i.e. for vehicles that cover only the route between the junction with the N-II highway and the junction with the GI-600).
A new motorway section
The works awarded involve the construction of 4.4 kilometres of new motorway, thereby prolonging the so-called “Maresme Axis” and permitting the staged implementation of Catalonia’s Transport Infrastructures Plan, which contemplates a future highway reaching Lloret de Mar and, subsequently, Tossa de Mar.
This new section of the C-32 will be made up of two 3.5 metre-wide lanes in each direction, and will begin at the current Palafolls junction, which will be remodelled. Later on, the motorway will link with the GI-600, which joins Blanes with Tordera. This point will see the construction of a new junction in the form of a roundabout below the level of the motorway itself.
Also planned is the lengthening of the motorway by 5,550 metres to link up with the future A-2 dual carriageway, to be built by Spain’s Ministry of Public Works between Tordera and Vidreres.
The main structure planned for the new section of the C-32 is 94 metre-long viaduct which will cross the River Tordera and pass the Can Gelpí area and over the Blanes-Maçanet de la Selva railway line. This viaduct will be formed by two parallel bridges, one in each direction.
The project will be completed with the installation of longitudinal and transversal drainage systems, full vertical and horizontal signposting and environmental integration measures such as seeding and plantations.
Approving the project
The procedures for approving these works began in 2001, when the DPTOP approved the routing and environmental impact study, but the tender process did not progress due to lack of on-the-ground agreement on the routing and its connection with the A-2.
The definitive construction plans were approved in December 2007 and the tender process began on the works, which involve the lengthening of motorway from Palafolls, crossing the River Tordera, to the junction with the future A-2 dual carriageway between Tordera and Vidreres.
