Today saw the commencement of works on the third land of the AP-7 between the Mediterranean (junction of the AP-2 and AP-7) and Vila-seca/Salou (Tarragona). July witnessed acesa awarding the execution of the different sections of this project to the companies Comsa Empresa Constructora, S.A. and the joint venture UTE Vías y Construcciones, S.A. y Romero Gamero, S.A.
Both construction companies have commenced the roadworks, which are carried out on the outside of the road and will later continue with the section to be extended into the central reservation. Works have thus begun today at kilometre point 231 (close to Altafulla), northbound, and at kilometre point 254 (Reus).
This project, which is the result of an April 2006 agreement between the Spanish Ministry of Public Works and acesa, with the collaboration of the Generalitat de Catalunya, will be completed with the AP-7 North (Girona) being widened from three to four lanes (Girona ring road). All these actions comprising the AP-7 widening project will bring about a substantial improvement to this strategic Mediterranean corridor.
