"Universo Miró", the exhibition organized by Abertis Foundation, Fundació Joan Miró and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain, opens in Berlin

  • The capital of Germany hosts since today an itinerant exhibition that displays five Mirós’ masterpieces in Embassies and Consulates of Spain in foreign countries between 2019 and 2020, thanks to the collaboration of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain, the Abertis Foundation and the Fundació Joan Miró.
  • Workset includes the paintings Personnage, Oiseau I, II, and III and the sculptures Femme, Oiseau and Femme, of early 70’s.
  • Abertis, via its Foundation, partnerships with cultural institutions to make culture accessible to the general public and to accompany Governments in countries in which it has a presence.

The itinerant exhibition "Universo Miró", organized thanks to the collaboration between the Abertis Foundation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain, and Fundació Joan Miró, was inaugurated today in the Residence of the Spanish Ambassador in Berlin, Germany.

The workset includes paintings from 1973 Personnage, Oiseau I, II, and III, of simplified composition, where Miró magnifies the images until he occupies practically the whole canvas with an energetic gesture. The exhibition is completed with the sculptures Femme, Oiseau and Femme, both from the beginning of the 70’s, whom title and composition are based on the artist's signs vocabulary.

Berlin is the second stage of this itinerant exhibition, after being displayed in Rome, Italy. It will tour to the Spanish embassies in Dublin, Ireland; Brussels, Belgium; and Paris, France, until February 2020. The aim is to tour also to diplomatic and consular representations of Spain in foreign countries, especially those in which the Abertis Group has a presence. The collaboration agreement, signed by Abertis, Fundació Joan Miró, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation on December 20, 2018, also includes the realization of educational activities among local school communities, related to this exhibition.

Fundació Joan Miró has also published a catalog that includes, among others, an essay signed by Ester Ramos, curator of the Collection area of Fundació Joan Miró, which goes over the genealogy of the sign in the artist's work.

The president of the Joan Miró Foundation, Sara Puig, said: “Thanks to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation and the Abertis Foundation for the agreement between the three institutions that allows us to present today this small but representative exhibition in Berlin, the second of the route, and to strengthen the idea of Miró when he said: ‹‹ It is not a work that counts, but the trajectory of the spirit throughout life››”. Sergi Loughney, director of the Abertis Foundation, also expressed: “We are proud and grateful to Joan Miró Foundation and the Ministry for making this project possible”.

The Abertis Foundation

Abertis is an international reference group in the management of toll roads. As part of its strategic corporate social responsibility plan, the company has a strong commitment to the promotion of culture. The impulse of the exhibition “Universe Miró” joins other important exhibitions sponsored by the Group, such as the great retrospective of Miró “La couleur de mes rêves”, a great retrospective of Miró that has been visited at the Grand Palais in Paris (France) until last February of 2019, with great success of public.

Also, in recent years, the Group has sponsored exhibitions by Joan Miró and other great artists such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Diego Velázquez or Antoni Gaudí, in cities such as Paris, Madrid, Rome, Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro or Santiago de Chile.

The Abertis Foundation was born in 1999 as a non-profit organization, with the objective of responding to the impact that the economic activity of the Abertis Group has on the different territories and countries where the Group is present. The Foundation has always given priority to actions related to road safety, the environment and social action, in line with Abertis Strategic Social Responsibility Plan and the Abertis Group's commitment to road safety.

The Fundació Joan Miró

The Fundació Joan Miró was created by the artist himself and opened its doors to the public in 1975. It has a unique collection of Joan Miró's works, his personal library and a file with all his preparatory drawings, which makes the Fundació a centre of reference in the investigation, divulgation and promotion of the production and the legacy of the artist.

Since its inauguration as the first museum in Barcelona dedicated to modern and contemporary art, the Fundació Joan Miró has also hosted numerous temporary exhibitions. It has also promoted the “Espai 13”, one of the first rooms dedicated to emerging artists and curators, and an active educational space focused on the promotion of creativity and a better understanding of modern and contemporary artistic practices.
