•The Zero Accidents AI Challenge is part of Beyond Roads, Abertis' innovation hub for advancing towards safer, more efficient and sustainable mobility.
Barcelona, 8th May 2025 – The Spanish company EarthPulse has been selected as the winner of the Zero Accidents AI Challenge, promoted by Abertis and the Abertis Foundation, for its innovative Road Safety Pulse solution. This AI-based platform integrates multiple data sources, including satellite imagery, weather information, traffic patterns and road network features, to predictively anticipate the road sections where accidents are most likely to occur.
The jury, formed by mobility, innovation and infrastructure management experts from all the different countries in which Abertis operates, was particularly impressed by the project's preventive and technological approach, as well as its capacity for integration into existing systems and its direct impact on road safety. The winning project will receive a €40,000 prize with which to roll out a real pilot in the Abertis operational ecosystem in one of its subsidiaries around the world. In addition, the three runner-up projects will also receive a prize of €6,000 each.
“"With Road Safety Pulse, we are taking another step forward in our commitment to road safety. EarthPulse's proposal combines cutting-edge technology with an applied and operational vision that can help us anticipate incidents and optimise our resources," said Antonio Durán, Global Head of Innovation at Abertis
Georgina Flamme, director of the Abertis Foundation, stated that "this challenge is going to help us promote new ways of guaranteeing more efficient and sustainable road safety, one of the Abertis Foundation's cornerstones, and its popularity encourages us to keep on working with the startup ecosystem in new editions"
The EarthPulse team welcomed the recognition as an opportunity to further scale its solution internationally: "We aim to democratise access to satellite analytics and demonstrate how it can be applied in practical ways to save lives on the road," explained Laura Moreno, CEO of EarthPulse.
Abertis Global Challenges
63 startups from 26 countries submitted entries to this second edition, consolidating the continuity of the challenge launched in 2024 under the name 'Drone Challenge'. That edition was won by Azisa & Aren, a US-Spanish alliance that fostered the combined use of drones and artificial intelligence infrastructure inspection. Last year's edition paved the way for the open innovation programme that Abertis is still developing with this new focus on road safety and accident prevention.
This new challenge reinforces Abertis' commitment to promoting open innovation and attracting global talent to respond to the great challenges of today's mobility. As part of the Beyond Roads hub, the Zero Accidents AI Challenge seeks solutions that improve road safety and optimise infrastructure management from a technological and sustainable perspective.
